Translated by Lucy Crane with wood engravings by Harry Brockway. Private Press. The Old Stile Press. 262mm x 175mm. 40 Pages. The paper is from a special making of Zerkall mould made. The type is Centeur, 16 wood engravings, including one large frontispiece, printed from the wood. Number of copies 220 - my copy is 210 and signed by Harry Brockway and Bookbinder Paul C Delrue.
Binding. Covers in marked vellum with the spine and board sides in matching Harmatan goatskin, pale yellow. The sheets are sewn on five tapes with toned endpapers. The top edge is trimmed and coloured with acrylics, with hand sewn silk headbands. There is a matching leather joint toning in with the outer cover, suede flyleaves and handmade endpapers. My design is in keeping with Harry Brockway’s woodcuts, with onlays of mid blue leather cut outs of flowers, birds, faces onlays together with blind decoration. The title is hand lettered in 18 point York along the spine. Faithful John. The book is housed in a protective up and over box, covered in mid blue waterproof buckram and lined inside with matching blue suede. Faithful John is one of the best, most complicatedly written and, more than most , liberally filled with apparent parables. The Ravens who haunt the attempts of the young prince to woo the beautiful princess; the faithful servant whose selfless acts are misinterpreted to the point of his being executed, whereupon his lifeless body turns to stone and can only be redeemed by child sacrifice….which in truth is reversed by the power of faith….powerful and fascinating stuff!
